Since the 21st, I was trying to post something to this blog. I have like three separate articles under construction but there was literally no time for that. So, I know I'm late but I wish you all merry Christmas and a happy new year!
Anyway, here you can read about my underground music experience, this is my version of spinach quiche with baked tomatoes recipe, then there's a report of my family Christmas and an outfit with my new boho dress my sisters got me for Christmas.

Christmas in da house
My mum loves big families. She was happy to accept my boyfriend to our family circle and even happier for we celebrate with them every year (as Ales's family does not celebrate Christmas for personal and religious reasons). The holiday has the same schedule every year.
OUTFIT: Post-Christmas bingeing
Okay, that was a bit exaggerating. Truth is, there was a LOT of food. All the poultry and pastry and... food... Anyway, this is the outfit I wore to a 25th December traditional lunch at my grandma's, starring my new boho dress my sisters got me for Christmas.

How to cook: Spinach quiche with baked tomatoes
After all these visits at my mum's and grandma's, all the fat, meat, pastry, we were all so stuffed, so full and so tired of all the food that we needed some lighter meal. It was me who invited all the present relatives to join us in out apartment for this fresh and light dinner. The quiche is brilliant by itself but, as my dad said, the tomatoes play an interesting tune in the chord (not sure, if this metaphor works in English as well). Nevertheless, I borrowed the recipe from Foodlover (who used the quiche dough from cook book of Dita P., I made a few changes), the tomatoes are my idea.

Underground lair
This last week was insane, I tell you! I finished my Econ paper (8 pages), handed in part of my bachelor work (10 pages), managed to clean the flat, bake all the necessary... And then had a nice weekend, full of cleaning but also culture. Sunday was the day of the Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. It was pretty good. I must say I really donť like the side plot with a lovestory between a dwarf and an elf, I think the elf girl has really stupid and cheesy lines, but despite that it was a good movie and I cried like a little girl. The best thing about Hobbit in our cinema was, that it started at half past five so there was still plenty of time afterwards. And we were hoping to see my friend's concert. He's a folk singer and songwriter, and his lyrics are just perfect. The concert was in an old mill that served as a community centre. It is not in a very good state but some rooms are fully functional. I wasn't sure about local supply of beverages so I warned Aleš that there might not be anything to drink. False alarm. The concert was in a room that looked like somebody's living room, bottles of beer were sold and it all looked like... Well I don't know, but the atmosphere and location looked the way I imagine the underground concerts. I mean, back in the communist regime in Czech Republic, most music was strictly controlled so all the "cool" kids who wanted to hear something out of mainstream, had to meet in secret, sometimes in barns or some old places, were often caught by police and stuff. I was born after this era ended (luckily!) but this concert made me think of it. Anyway, the first band (well second, but we didn't hear that one) was called "Kopec šišek", a Prague death-folk duo, that sometimes performs under different names. Then it was time for our friend to show up. The music was sloppy and in the end his guitar was terribly out of tune, but still it was great. Here are some photos.

OUTFIT: Black n' red
I've always had this colour combination connected with singing. You see, I used to sing in a acapella group and we always performed in red and black clothes. There were times I hadf no other colours in my closet. From time to time I feel nostalgic and wear it again...

How to cook: pork steak with spinach sauce and baked potatoes ENG/ CZ

Hail to the cooking master! Seriously though, I know it doesn't look that way but most of my diet consists of beans and legumes, rice, vegetables and vegetarian stuff. But, most of these delicious meals don't look very nice in a photo, so you have to get over with the fact that all the recipes are not very healthy... I'll try my best to get a nice photo of my delicious vegan Indian lentil soup or of my favourite falafel with corn-tomato salad. But right now:

Good morning!
I am really satisfied with my schedule this semester. I never get up earlier then 7 a.m. (that is good, trust me, 5 a.m. is terrible and there are people getting up sooner) - it means that sometimes I have my coffee in the train but nevermind that, had a good night sleep. I have school only four days a week and only one full day, so I can do some other work and still have some free time. But in winter as the nights are getting longer, I wake up ad it is still dark outside. I know, I can see many beautiful sunsets...
But I leave home in the dark and come home when it's dark again so I don't enjoy the day and I¨m always tired. That is why it's so comforting to have one day off at weekend (trust me, I haven't had one in months and I don't even count schoolwork), get up at half past eight (the sun's up already and I am not the type that could sleep all morning, the day is too short for that) and have a nice cup of tea with your design tea mug and design tea infuser...
The mug was a present from my boyfriend and my mum brought the teabot from her trip to Prague. The good thing about the mug is that you put the lid on and your beverage won't spill. Or you can have it on the side and put cookies in it. Or a teabot. As for the infuser, it's arms are adjustable, so it fits all kinds and shapes of mugs. Both items are just lovely and easy to be found in online shops. and they fit together just fine. And I love them!

How to cook: Meat-filled pasta with cream tomato sauce
ENG
When I was younger, everyone in my family believed that I will never be the sort of a woman who is into cooking and so did I. But as I moved out to live with my boyfriend, It turned out I am quite good at it. And more, I like to experiment a bit with spices and tastes. Italian cuisine is my favourite and I had this pack of conchiglioni pasta for ages and just wanted to do something about it.

OUTFIT: Favourite colours
In the past I used to be the type, that wore a lot of black and all the outfits were at least black-based. But now, as I am discovering my skin-type and everything, I am more interested in shades of brown. I think it just fits me better. The combination of caramel brown and blue is the one I like the most.

Series of Unfortunate Events - great to read if you're and adult too
After having to go through my Psychology notes and book in order to pass the exam (got an A, like a boss!), then writing a 4 pages essay about the intercultural topic of White Teeth, 4 pages of culture traditions in Šumava, another 4 concerning The Story of Lucy Gault (what a strange book) and skimming the Economics book (the worst thing ever!) I just needed some rest. And as my idea of free time is reading a nice and easy book, I've decided to read Lemony Snicket. I must admit, I never cared about the series when I was younger. Maybe because at the time it appeared in Czech translation, I was so into Harry Potter and then Lord of the Rings, that I wasn't interested, I don't know. Anyway, even though it is a book for children, obviously, I enjoy reading it now. I got it in English, of course, so I keep up my level a bit.
I must say, sometimes it's pretty ingenious. After reading about a snake called Virginian Woolf that cannot be let near a typewriter I had to pause for almost 3 minutes, as I was laughing hard (the lady in the train looked suprised). Also, the beginning of 6th book got me: The book you are holding in your two hands right now-assuming that you are, in fact, holding this book, and that you have only two hands--is one of two books in the world that will show you the difference between the word “nervous” and the word “anxious.” The other book, of course, is the dictionary, and if I were you I would read that book instead."
The good thing is, that the book is quite predictable. It's like watching CSI (or Scooby-Doo, which I hate). Being familiar with the scheme of the book series makes it easier to read even when you are tired. Also, each book is very short, so even when I'm short of time, I manage to finish it in one day, which is great as I have to deal with other texts and if I had to split the story, I wouldn't remember the beginning when finishing it.
I also enjoy the explanations of some complicated words. Some are really funny to read.
One more thing. I'm not sure If I would want to read it as a child. There are so many dead people and other dreadful things! It would make me terrified of other people. But perhaps more grateful for having a loving family.
Overall: Totally worth it. Better that sitting all day watching some sitcoms or series that just repeat themselves (I'm looking forward to my everyday episode of Bones though). And, there's a movie, not so bad, even though it only consists of the first three books.

OUTFIT: Black but not boring
I believe it is a pity, that women don't wear hats. Recently I found out I just love them, especially in Autumn. I believe it is time to wear knit hats only when it is snowing or literally freezing. Which nowaday is not (there were signs of snow yesterday, hundreds of our trains were cancelled, but in the afternoon there was none left). But the fact is, that the wind is really annoying sometimes and I could use a headwear.

Girl issues
Since I started to focus on my body type and skin type and all the other types I fit in, in order to dress better, look better, ergo feel better, I realised I have to get a brown mascara, as the black one feels too aggressive on my face for casual circumstances and is only suitable for evenings. But the shopping turned out to be an adventure! The fact is, I've been to half a dozen drugstores, and still nothing. I gave up at that time. Today I repeated the drugstore tour. I've searched every stall with makeup and it turned out that there is no one who wants a brown mascara. But apparently, there's a market for blue, amethyst, green and pink ones.

Why you should / shouldn't read Kazuo Ishiguro
I've been working on my book list for my English finals. I already have those thirty books we were supposed to have (unlike the others, I believe you should read everything on your list and not just an extract from each book), but I am still trying to make the list more interesting. I've read several present authors we were recommended - ok, I've read them not only because they sounded interesting but also to make an impression, but I don't think that's wrong. Anyway, Kazuo Ishiguro was one of the recommended. I started with Remains of the Day and, as I didn't quite get it, I continued with Never Let Me Go. Now I understand a little better.

OUTFIT: Bookworm
Not a very appealing name for an outfit, you might say, but that is just
who I am. I love the combination of black and caramel brown, it goes
well with the colour of my hair. As it's getting chilly in Czech rep, I
started wearing infinity scarves. I don't like those really warm ones,
as I sweat a lot in these, so I bought a few light and soft ones and I
am really pleased, warm and comfy.
I am making progress in my braids. My "Juliya Timoshenko" looks much better that it used to, even though I still can't figure out how to make the braid look the same from both sides. But it's a great thing to do, when you forgot /didn't have time or mood to wash your hair and still want to look good. My best braid work was my version of Daenerys Targaeryen for my sisters' prom, I'm waiting for the photos so I can show you.

Long time no see
Sorry for the pause, but as the end of the semester is approaching, all the seminar papers, presentations, economy tasks and bachelor thesis are piling up. But I'll try my best to make it up for you in the upcoming week, I promise. Yesterday I finished my lexicology handout, seminar paper for culture in Czech regions and picked topic for economy paper. I am starting to feel exhausted and the worst part of the semester is yet to come. I managed to get some Christmas gifts (and Name day and Birthday gifts), even though I am far from being ready for Christmas. I have no idea when am I going to make the Advent crown and Christmas wreath and set up all Christmas decorations!
But I'm an optimist. It's not that I can't manage to do other things. For instance I saw two theatre plays this month, Visiting Mr. Green and Scapino, both enjoyable, even though I liked Mr. Green better. My sisters had a prom last week. The were so beautiful. Like night and day (the blonde had lovely ivory - pink dress with rhinestone applique and hair updo, the dark haired had black dress with open back, golden accessories and hair loose on the side) they were! And it was the first prom I attended together with my love, so we really enjoyed it! I managed to do some sewing, there had been things to improve waiting for me for ages. I also visited my favourite thrift shops and got a few things, most of them needed to be cut, sewn or otherwise adjusted but I don't mind that. Oh, and I bought a kilt! Like a real one, made in Scottish Highlands, from real wool, for just 60 CZK (about three dollars, I believe)!
I read my favourite Sci-fi saga for the third time. It consists of 10 books and I'm planning to write a review because I think Orson Scott Card is a must, not only for science fiction fans.
As for work, except from my standard hours in a bookshop, I spent some time as a Coat Check girl in the theatre/cinema/culture house for their puppet festival. I was also part of the staff for the strudel making competition. It was such a mess! Plus, all staff had to wear white aprons all the time (not very convenient, I managed to get it dirty in 5 minutes). I was able to steal two small pieces of strudel for myself, before the visitors attacked the tables with the apple pastry and ate everything. Truth is, I look tremendous in an apron :D
Tomorrow I am heading to Prague for my friend's graduation ceremony. We're having lunch in her favourite burger restaurant with her parents. On Saturday I'm back at the Hussite museum for a day (and two more in December). My plans for next week - passing the methodology of research test, finishing review of Zadie Smith's White Teeth for intercultural studies lesson, starting a paper for economy and getting together notes for the upcoming exam from Psychopathology. As I've said, I'm not not busy at all.

If I stay
I quite admire Chloë Grace Moretz, so I was having a hard time waiting for the movie, as I missed it in the cinema's. But then I discovered the book. And as I am one of those who believe that Book Is Always Better (with a small exception, which was Green Mile and LOTR, the movies are equally good as the books), I decided to read it first, so I could be bitching about how different the movie is and how they screwed up , that's what I do... Anyway, this is the book review. And below is a movie trailer with Czech subtitles.

OUTFIT: Steampunk ostrich
I had an idea for a T-shirt. I don't know how it came to my mind to paint a steampunk ostrich, it just did. The problem was that I couldn't find a picture I would like and I am not very good at painting and drawing, I am more music type. Then my love make a prototype sketch for me and I just edited it a bit and voila, the pattern was ready. This is the first version, it needs more layers, the picture is still stained. But I couldn't wait to wear it.

Two bands were involved, The Unholy Preachers and Dirty Blondes, videos attached, enjoy.

28th Pilsen
So on the 28th of October we went for an organised trip to Pilsen (Plzeň). It was organised by a culture centre, where my SO works at the moment and they had free seats on the bus so we just had to pay for the entrance fees to several sights and not for the bus ride, which was great. Also, 28th October is a national holiday in Czech Republic (the creation of an independent state of Czechoslovakia in 1918) and most sights in Pilsen had the entrances only for 28 CZK. Also, many of these had special offers of commented tours. We arrived at 9 a.m. and our guide waited at the parking place. He showed us the historical centre.

Reading people
This is not technically a book review but I thought I'll just put it there. I like it when people read in public. And this guy in particular... well, it was a very interesting view. The only problem was that there was a couple in my was and I didn't want to look like stalker or to spook the object by coming closer. Also I used my compact camera and I changed some settings a bit earlier and didn't realise that I changed the size of the picture, so it turned out that it is really small! But I still like it.

Steampunk Tea Party
On Saturday I was attending this long expected Steampunk party. I have never been to such event so I was a bit nervous. Also, I knew like two people and from work only and those who organised this thing all knew each other. So I put on my costume and went. As I was approaching the place, I felt like I really want to turn back and go home. Luckily, I didn't. At first, me and two others waited outside for the rest. We were just chatting a bit and finally, all of us showed up. Well, there were only six of us, but as the leader said, that is already one more person than she expected (meaning me as the new arrival). We went to this tiny cafe with a lovely interior and all had a dessert and a cup of hot chocolate (yummy!). All these people were really friendly (and loved the way I decorated my boots). Also, they knew each other because they do these things all the time, historical cosplays, battle replays, quests, steampunk, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, all you can imagine. It's not that I am a freak or something, not that I would like to devote all my life to playing but I like the idea of having this sort of fun sometimes. We agreed, that we will arrange some other meeting soon, perhaps in different costumes, we'll see. And here is the promised photo report. Some of the pictures are mine, some are from the other two cameras that were there.

Nine out of ten...
So, we got this new oven. You know, I hate being this woman who is in a couple and keeps using "we" all the time, but the truth is, I can't say "I got a new oven", because that is not technically true.
And why did we get a new one again? Because the one that was in our apartment didn't work the way it should. Someone actually connected the wires wrongand it was a miracle that it was still running (so the electrician said), so our landlord agreed on buying a new one. We picked it, he paid for it, we paid for the guy to plug it in properly. And it is awesome. It has this grill function, so you can make kebabs and grilled chicken and other delicious things. Yesterday I tried this function for the first time and it turned out that our cat loves it... She loves it so much that not even me, taking pictures of her, couldn't disturb her. And it is hilarious.
I believe our cat approves the oven we've chosen. In fact, nine out of ten cats (hypothetically, I am NOT a cat lady) approve the grill function so you should get that, too.
By the way, the kebab was super delicious.

Super stylish family
In one of my first articles I mentioned that the fact that I moved
away from my family helped me develop my own sense for fashion (maybe
not the right one, but definitely mine and not someone else's). This
doesn't mean that living with them was somehow bad. It wasn't. But I
wore a lot of my mother's clothes (who is S size, while I was M+),
because back then I hated shopping for clothes and I found this
arrangement easier. I still get to have her shoes (we are same size and
have similar way of stretching the shoe. And she keeps buying new pairs
of the same style, so at one moment she has like 30 - 50 pairs of shoes
but only 10 - 20 styles. And as she could never wear them all, I always
get some. Which is great, because I hate buying shoes. And to be honest,
she picks shoes that won't get out of fashion (at least not very soon).
I also spoke about the fact, that living with three beautiful and thin women (I have to get used to this expression, my sisters are 19 years old, for Brian's sake!) made my self-esteem really low (no bad feelings towards them though) so I am more satisfied with my size now that I am living on my own.

Recycling clothes
I decided to write something about how am I getting so many cool things from a second-hand store, when many of you complain about never finding anything worth it. But before I even started, I found the same article on my favourite blogger web page! And it points out basically the same things as I wanted to. The only difference is, that the article is in Czech. So if you want to, you can read it here. Also, I'm a big fan of the girl, and, to be honest, I got inspired a lot by her style and I appreciate that someone else believes that thrift stores are hiding a lot of fabulous pieces.
Anyway, I have my own tips and tricks, in English of course, so you can read it or compare or whatever.

If you didn't catch all the lyrics, here you go (English + Czech translation as a bonus - not a great one, but I am lazy to do my own)

OUTFIT: Dress for your job
This was just an ordinary day at work. And as I work in a used book store, which happens to sell vinyl LP's, CD's and comicbooks (apart from ordinary books), well, this outfit seems appropriate.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Have you seen the movie? I did. And I loved it. I loved Emma in her short haircut, I adored Ezra Miller (as much as I do in every movie he's in) and Charlie, oh Charlie, how much I felt sorry for you! I didn't get to the book until last week, because it was not available in Czech and, to be honest, I was too lazy to read it in English. But that is exactly what I eventually did. And I love the movie a little less...
The book is perfect. You know the kind of books that make you feel horrible and awesome at the same time? Well that's the one. The language is simple (I didn't have to look up any words, except for "jaundice"), the letter form makes it interesting and the story line is easy to follow. On the other hand, the movie didn't depict Charlie's personality as well as the book did (in it's defense I must say that it must have been really difficult). But the truth is that Charlie is a really complicated personality, with many "little secrets" and he's a teenager. Sometimes I know exactly how he feels, the confusion, the disbalance, despair, and I had no such stories in my life as he did. But I felt the same. The feeling I'm trying to describe is best shown in one of the final scenes in the film, when Charlie says:
"There is so much pain. And I-I-I don't know how to not notice it."
Dr. Burton: "What's hurting you?"
Charlie: "No, not... not me. It's them! It's... it's everyone. It never stops. Do you understand?"
That is, I think, the crucial moment. The one that explains everything. That some people feel the urge to help the others, to make them happy and not care about themselves...
It is difficult time, growing up. No matter if you had stuff like Charlie going on or not.
When I first watch the movie and then read the book, I try not to say "The book was better". And I won't do it now. I think both movie and book are worth it.
We are infinite...

No style at all
I know that "style" was more a highschool thing, but it is still around these days. Now what am I talking about? Remember the times, when you had to belong to a box, group or whatever you call it and thus you had to dress in a particular way. For example if you listened to hip-hop, the only option for you were baggy trousers, huge shirts and those baseball caps. I never got that. I never truly belonged. I never listened to one type of music and wore just one style of clothes. I love experiments. I love the fact, that you can dress up to your mood as well as you can listen to certain music. And these two thing don't have to come together. It happens quite often to me that I dress up in a very girly style (pink, red, flowers and everything) and then listen to Rammstein in the train. Some might say that I am a bit of a schizofrenic, because these things should reflect your personality. Well, what if my personality is playful? I love games! And fashion and music are games. Sometimes I don't have any style at all. I dress ordinarily and do not listen to anything because I am not in the mood. And sometimes I make up creations. I had a presentation about Native Americans in USA and I wore a poncho. Next I am having a presentation about subcultures of teenagers with my friend. I am planning to wear my Dr. Martens', leather jacket, spiked bracelets and just look interesting. It is not that we get evaluated for that, it is just that I love attention and I think that, well, I deserve it. I mean, I tell interesting information, and, to be honest, the only way to make them listen (at school) is to look interesting enough.
Back to the issue. I think it is not necessary to have a style. I know it is much harder on high school, when you have a group of friends and all of them dress alike and you just want to fit in. I don't give a damn anymore. I did, for some time. But people should not like you for what you wear nor what you listen to. And if it is the only thing they like about you then it isn't worth it. It was difficult, too. I know how much I tried to blend in. I didn't. So I became awesome. True story.

OUTFIT: The Simpsons' fan
It might be odd, but this outfit is inspired by my animated hero, Homer Simpson. I actually saw these blue pants in a second-hand store and I thought: hey, Homer's trousers! And I knew that I won't be the only one to think of that. So I decided to make it an intention. I bought a sixpack of Duff beer so I had the caps to make earrings and a ring and those badges from it and voila!

100 happy days
Maybe you have noticed this project. If you haven't, you may either visit this webpage or live in peace without it. The point is, that we live in an unpleasant times. We eat in a hurry, sleep in a hurry, even love in a hurry. And we are tired, hungry, nervous and depressed. The point of this project is to notice even the small things in your life, that make you happy. To find one thing that makes you happy, every day. Tha bad thing about it is the picture-posting. On one hand, it is good for you to have visual contact with things that make you happy, so you can look at them whe you're in a bad mood. On the other hand, the are things that cannot be photographed. Like yesterday, my SO came from work at 10 p.m. and we cuddled then and watched Devil's advocate. And how are you supposed to take picture of that, huh? And even if it was possible, it would definitely ruin the moment. There are many of these. Moments that are unique and joyful and you can't just put them on a photo and then share on Facebook.
But this idea made me notice something. Well, not notice, maybe the word I'm looking for is appreciate more. I live a happy life. There are at least three things that make me happy each day. Even when it's a bad day. I enjoy the little things. And so should you.

Braids revival
You know, a couple years ago, a girl having a braid was the one that spent a lot of time with horses (not in a good way). Cool girls did not wear braid/s. Now you can see them everywhere. Why is that? Well, these two ladies probably had something to do with it...
I know, that the mania around Frozen has been here for ages, but you have to admit, that you've seen a lot of these braids, sometimes as a casual hairdo, sometimes on bridesmaids etc.

Visiting Prague
After we got back from the cabin in the woods, we planned to spend a weekend in Prague. My friend has an apartment there, which she only uses when she goes to school, so no one was there that weekend. On Saturday morning we got on a train to the capital and to the ZOO. Last time I was there was in the second year of high school, we had like three hours to spend and we had three pages of tasks we had to finish before leaving. So we ended up running through the ZOO like idiots, trying to answer as many questions as possible which meant that in general, we saw nothing. So this time it was supposed to be relaxed and as long as we could handle. So, finally, we spent 6,5 hours in the ZOO. Splendid!
